FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

EMERYVILLE CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS PRESENTS THE 28TH

ANNUAL EMERYVILLE ART EXHIBITION

OCTOBER 11 – NOVEMBER 2, 2014

Opening Reception, 6-9pm, Friday, October 10, 2014

6121 Hollis Street, Suite 900, Heritage Square, Emeryville, CA

Emeryville Celebration of the Arts, Inc. announces the Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition, a juried show featuring works of 117 artists and craftspeople - both established and emerging - who live or work in Emeryville. The work includes paintings, sculpture, photographs, ceramics and textiles. Now in its 28th year, the Annual Exhibition expands its celebration of the arts to include poetry readings and modern dance performances. The Exhibition is on display October 11 through November 2, 2014. The show is open daily from 11 am to 6 pm; admission is free. The location, donated by Wareham Development, is 6121 Hollis Street, Suite 900, Heritage Square, Emeryville, CA.

There will be a gala public reception with the artists in attendance on Friday, October 10, from 6 pm to 9 pm. Admission to the reception is free; a no-host bar will raise funds for the Emeryville Youth Art Program, and local artist Tony DeMartile will create iPhone portraits of reception attendees for a $25 donation to benefit the non-profit Emeryville Celebration of the Arts.

The individual pieces of artwork in the Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition demonstrate the range of Emeryville artists and show their engagement with a host of aesthetic, political, and social concerns. This inclusive citywide exhibition provides the opportunity to view the work of new artists showing along with continuing artists, resulting in a uniquely ‘Emeryville’ experience. The 2014 Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition proudly hosts the largest collection of artwork in its 28-year history and has expanded its celebration of the arts to include poetry readings with Emeryville’s Poet Laureate Sarah Kobrinsky, joined by Poets Laureate of several Bay Area cities, and a site-specific dance performance by Emeryville dance troupe Nancy Karp + Dancers. For the schedule of readings and performances visit www.emeryarts.org.

Contributing artists include Po Shun Leong and Dean Santner, wood; John W. Lund and Kirk Crippens, photography; Jeff Margolin and Rae Dunn, ceramics; Susan T. Avila and Ana Lisa Hedstrom, textiles; M. Louise Stanley and Ann Holsberry, painting; Jerome Ranft and Jeffrey Hantman, sculpture; Kazuko Watanabe and Linda Goodman, prints; and LauraLe Wunsch, furniture design. Works on exhibit are for sale.

The collection of artwork for the annual exhibition was selected by a jury of art professionals through artist studio visits. For the fourth year, independent curator and exhibition designer Kathleen Hanna is serving as curator and juror. The other 2014 jurors are Donna Seager, partner Seager Gray Gallery, Mill Valley; and Anthony Torres, Exhibitions Director and Curator of Art, Richmond Art Center.

“I was delighted to see the amazement and enthusiasm of my fellow jurors as they discovered the wealth of artistic talent in Emeryville,” said Kathleen Hanna, curator and exhibition designer. “I was also excited to see new artists and fabulous new works by those with whom I was already familiar. This year’s collection is larger and more diverse than ever before.”

Juror Anthony Torres found the shear magnitude of work by artists in Emeryville absolutely astonishing. “The range, quality, and dedicated practice was indeed impressive,” Torres explained. “I am honored to have participated in the selection process and flattered to have been allowed to view the work of so many great artists.”

“The response from artists this year was unprecedented!” said Sharon Wilchar, Exhibition Coordinator. “This is the largest show in our history, yet we realize there is also a great wealth of artists in our community that reaches beyond visual arts. There are amazing writers, dancers, performers and musicians in Emeryville. This year, in addition to the strong visual artwork, we are proud to include both a spoken word component and a dance performance choreographed specifically for our exhibition.”

For the ninth consecutive year, the Emeryville City Council has approved a Purchase Award Program in connection with the Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition. A selection panel will review the works in the exhibition and make a recommendation for the Purchase Award. With the approval of the City Council, the artwork selected will become part of the City’s permanent collection displayed at City Hall.

Sponsors for the 28th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition include the City of Emeryville through a substantial grant; Wareham Development, Pixar Animation Studios; Kava Massih Architects; 4Terra Investments, Libitzky Holdings LP, Orton Development, Eric S. Schmier and Kenneth J. Schmier and Ruby*s Cafe.
