There will be a gala public reception with the artists in attendance on Friday, October 5, from 6 pm to 9 pm. A no-host bar will raise funds for the Emeryville Youth Art Program.

The 26th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition carries on the city’s tradition of celebrating the broad diversity of art and artists within its community by presenting new discoveries each year. The sheer number and array of artists living or working in Emeryville illustrates the city’s cultural vibrancy and provides an impressive creative pool that continues to develop provocative works for the annual exhibition. The individual pieces demonstrate the range of Emeryville artists and show their engagement with a host of aesthetic, political, and social concerns. This inclusive community exhibition provides the opportunity to view the work of new artists showing along with continuing artists, resulting in a uniquely ‘Emeryville’ experience.

The Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, photographs, prints, and ceramics. >The collection of artwork for the 26th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition was selected by a jury of art professionals through artist studio visits. For the second year, independent curator and exhibition designer Kathleen Hanna is serving as curator and juror. The other jurors are Kate Eilertsen, Executive Director, Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, and Seb Hamamjian, Director, Hamamjian Modern, San Francisco and Santa Cruz. (Works on exhibit are for sale.)

The mission of the Emeryville Celebration of the Arts, Inc. is to foster an appreciation for the arts and artists of Emeryville, and to promote the city as a culturally vital and progressive center for living and working. The Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition continues to support this mission by providing a free public venue, open to all, to experience the rich diversity of artistic expression of those who live and work within the city of Emeryville.

“It’s really impressive to me that, even after all these years with the exhibition, with the influx of new artists and the growth of established artists, everything feels new and fresh with the twenty-sixth Annual,” states Sharon Wilchar, Exhibition Coordinator and Chair of the City of Emeryville’s Public Art Advisory Committee.

Contributing artists include Robert Ortbal, sculpture; Canan Tolon, painting, Rik Ritchey, mixed media, Kirk Crippens, photography; Rae Dunn, ceramics; Dean Santner, wood; M. Louise Stanley, painting, Jerry Carniglia, painting and Ann Weber, sculpture.

26th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition juror and curator Kathleen Hanna responded to her experience by saying:
“My fellow jurors were amazed at the variety and quality of the art work that is being produced in Emeryville. This was my second consecutive year of studio visits. I was delighted to see new work from many people I had visited last year. The Celebration of the Arts is truly a wonderful community event. Everyone anticipates the opportunity to participate and is stimulated to produce new work for the exhibition.”

Juror Seb Hamamjian, Director, Hamamjian Modern, San Francisco and Santa Cruz, states:

“My first experience as a juror for the Emeryville Art Exhibition was 10 years ago...I enjoyed that experience and was pleased to be asked to be a juror for 2012. This year I was more amazed at the high percentage of extraordinary artists in such a small geographic area. Emeryville is a gold mine of artists and I strongly believe that the Emeryville Art Exhibition this year will impress all attendees.”

Juror Kate Eilertsen, Executive Director, Sonoma Valley Museum of Art Director, remarks:

“The creativity that is thriving in Emeryville today is truly amazing! In only 1.25 square miles artists of diverse mediums, interests, age and backgrounds are thriving. The exhibition this year will certainly be a wonderful reflection of a very interesting and inspired community.”

For the seventh consecutive year, the Emeryville City Council has approved a Purchase Award Program in connection with the Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition. A selection panel will review the works in the exhibition and make a recommendation for the Purchase Award. With the approval of the City Council, the artwork selected will become part of the City’s permanent collection displayed at City Hall.

The 2012 exhibition site is generously donated by the City of Emeryville. Additional sponsors for the 26th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition include the City of Emeryville through a substantial grant, Madison Marquette/Bay Street, Kava Massih Architects, TMG Partners, Wareham Development, BRE Properties, Inc., Pixar, Allegro Dancers, Inc., Clif Bar & Company, AAA Northern CA, NV & UT and Ruby*s Cafe.
