Emeryville Celebration of the Arts, Inc. (ECA), is pleased to announce the Pickleworks Building, at 1375 55th Street in Emeryville will serve as location of 33rd Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition. The annual juried show is held at a different location each year - generously donated by a local Emeryville business. The Mooney Family has donated the space for the 2019 Exhibition. Featuring the works of 115 artists and craftspeople who live or work in Emeryville, the Exhibition is on display October 5 through October 27, 2019, open daily from 11 am to 6 pm, and admission is free. There will be a gala public reception with the artists in attendance on Friday, October 4, from 6 pm to 9 pm, with live music by The doRiaN Mode: Vintage Jazz & Blues. A no-host bar will raise funds for the Emeryville Youth Art Program. For directions and emery-go-round stop, log on to: www.emeryarts.org or call 510/652-6122.

The 33rd Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition celebrates the work of Emeryville artists and includes paintings, sculpture, photographs, prints, textiles, ceramics, furniture, glass works and poetry. The sheer number and array of artists living or working in Emeryville illustrates the city's cultural vibrancy and provides an impressive creative pool that continues to create new and exciting works. The individual pieces demonstrate the diversity of Emeryville artists and show their engagement with a host of aesthetic, political, and social concerns. “I found that the work submitted for this year’s show reflects the artists' concerns with issues that are affecting all Americans at this point in our history: homelessness, violence, immigration,” said Kathleen Hanna, exhibition curator and juror.

The collection of artwork is selected by a panel of Bay Area arts professionals through studio visits along with digitally submitted works. Kathleen Hanna has served as curator and juror for the last seven years. The other 2019 jurors are George Lawson, director/owner of George Lawson Gallery, Mill Valley, and Elizabeth Shypertt, co-founder of Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco.

“Each year the exhibition is mounted in a different commercial or industrial space on loan to the organization. I attempt to create a gallery-like setting in these widely diverse locations and imagine how the works selected can be installed in an interesting manner,” explained Hanna. “This is challenging work that I enjoy immensely and I’m grateful to ECA for the opportunity. It is my pleasure to present again this year for the thirty-third time, the enormous artistic wealth of this tiny village in the middle of San Francisco’s Bay Area.

Contributing artists include conceptual artist Packard Jennings, painters M. Louise Stanley, Frank Cole, Teresa Kalnoskas, and Jayson Manzano, sculptors Mari Andrews, Mark Galt, Ken Kalman and metalsmith Curtis H. Arima, ceramic artists Jered Nelson, Cuong Ta, and Jeff Margolin, printmakers Linda Lee Boyd, Kazuko Watanabe, and Juliette Choné, photographers Ronald Davis, Jeannie O’Conner, and Susan Scott, and textile artist Susan T. Avila. Works on exhibit are for sale.

Along with the dynamic collection of visual art, the 2019 Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition will also host an ekphrasis poetry writing workshop and a special poetry reading both led by Emeryville’s former Poet Laureate, Sarah Kobrinsky. The poetry workshop takes place from 2:00-4:00 pm on Sunday, October 6 in the exhibition gallery. The workshop is free but participants must register (exhibition website/limit 20 participants). Workshop poets will join Kobrinsky to read their poems inspired by works in the exhibition on Sunday, October 20, 2:00-4:00 p.m. This event is free, open to the public and requires no registration. For details about the poetry workshop and reading visit www.emeryarts.org.

“Emeryville is a rich enclave, in many ways reminding me of Bushwick,” said juror George Lawson. “Overall, I was genuinely surprised with the level of engagement, the immersion artists brought to their varied practices. The greatest significance for me is in the affirmation of community that such a compressed tour makes so evident. Visiting well over 100 studios in such a short time, the team managed a remarkable balancing act by staying critical while honoring the values of inclusiveness. I expect it to be a good show.”

Emeryville is designated by the California Arts Council as one of only 14 cities across the state that serve as premier Cultural Districts, highlighting thriving cultural diversity and unique artistic identities. The Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition serves as a celebration of the city’s thriving collective creativity and an invitation for community members and visitors to experience a sampling of artwork created by Emeryville artists.

“Being a juror for the Emeryville Arts Exhibition was such an eye opener,” said juror Elizabeth Shypertt. “For such a relatively small city the abundance of artists and good art is remarkable. And being able to visit artists' studios and homes was such an enriching experience.”

The mission of the non-profit Emeryville Celebration of the Arts, Inc. is to foster an appreciation of the arts and artists of Emeryville, and to promote the city as a culturally vital and progressive center for living and working. The Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition continues to support this mission by providing a free public venue, open to all, to experience the rich diversity of artistic expression of those who live and work within the city of Emeryville.
