EMERYVILLE CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS PRESENTS
27th ANNUAL EMERYVILLE ART EXHIBITION
OCTOBER 5 - 27, 2013
Opening Reception, 6-9pm, Friday, October 4, 2013
5699 Bay Street, Emeryville, CA
Emeryville Celebration of the Arts, Inc. announces the 27th
Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition, a juried show featuring works of eighty
artists and craftspeople - both established and emerging - who live or work in
Emeryville. The work includes paintings, sculpture, photographs, ceramics and
textiles. The sheer number and array of artists living or working in Emeryville
illustrates the city's cultural vibrancy and provides an impressive creative
pool that continues to create new and exciting works for the annual exhibition.
The Exhibition is on display October 5 through
October 27, 2013, 5699 Bay Street in Emeryville, CA. The show is open daily
from 11 am to 6 pm; admission is free. Public Transportation: MacArthur BART
station, Emery-Go-Round Shellmound-Powell Route; AC Transit bus #26, and
Transbay commuter route Z from San Francisco. For directions, log on to: www.emeryarts.org
or call 510/652-6122.
There
will be a gala public reception with the artists in attendance on Friday,
October 4, from 6 pm to 9 pm. A no-host bar will raise funds for the Emeryville
Youth Art Program.
This
year’s exciting Bay Street location was generously donated by Madison Marquette. The character of Bay Street
Emeryville is drawn from the rich history of its bayside site as a place
where people have gathered for decades to live, work and play, providing the perfect environment to
showcase this unique community exhibition. The individual pieces demonstrate
the range of Emeryville artists and show their engagement with a host of aesthetic,
political, and social concerns. This inclusive citywide exhibition provides the
opportunity to view the work of new artists showing along with continuing artists,
resulting in a uniquely ‘Emeryville’ experience. (Works on exhibit are for sale.)
The collection of artwork for the 27th
Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition was selected by a jury of art professionals through
artist studio visits. For the third year, independent curator and exhibition
designer Kathleen Hanna is serving as curator and juror. The other jurors are René
de Guzman, Senior Curator of Art, Oakland Museum of California, and Sandy
Simon, potter, owner of TRAX Gallery, Berkeley.
Contributing
artists include Canan Tolon, painting; Po Shun Leong, wood; Kirk Crippens,
photography; Rae Dunn, ceramics; Ana Lisa Hedstrom, textiles; M. Louise
Stanley, painting and Ann Weber, sculpture.
27th
Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition juror and curator Kathleen Hanna responded to her experience by saying:
“My third consecutive year of
studio visits was amazing. New artists, great new work from artists I had met
the previous years and an overall feeling of community involvement and
anticipation of this wonderful event that brings together the entire town to
celebrate art.”
Juror René de Guzman, Senior Curator of Art, Oakland Museum of
California states:
“The
process of meeting with artists and seeing the works was exhilarating. I
was so impressed with the range of work and artists' dedication to their
craft. I've benefited so much from the experiences and I'm deeply
grateful to the artists of Emeryville for opening up their studios to me."
Juror Sandy
Simon, potter, owner of TRAX Gallery, Berkeley, said:
“The best word to describe success
is commitment. It takes commitment to be an artist and it takes scrutiny
to grow as an artist. The resulting exhibition will surely show the vibrancy we
experienced while viewing work from all who participated. I appreciated
being privy to the huge commitment many people revealed in their studio
practice.”
For the eighth
consecutive year, the Emeryville City Council has approved a Purchase Award
Program in connection with the Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition. A selection
panel will review the works in the exhibition and make a recommendation for the
Purchase Award. With the approval of the City Council, the artwork selected
will become part of the City’s permanent collection displayed at City Hall.
The 2013
exhibition site has been donated by Bay Street/Madison Marquette. Additional sponsors for the 27th Annual
Emeryville Art Exhibition include the City of Emeryville through a substantial
grant, City Center Realty Partners, LLC, Wareham Development, Pixar, Kava
Massih Architects, Thompson | Dorfman Partners, LLC, AAA Northern CA, NV &
UT, and Ruby*s Cafe.
