In celebrating its 25th anniversary, this unique and inclusive community exhibition continues to present new discoveries each year. The sheer number and array of artists living or working in Emeryville illustrates the city's cultural vibrancy and provides an impressive creative pool that continues to develop new and exciting works for the annual exhibition. The individual pieces demonstrate the diversity of Emeryville artists and show their engagement with a host of aesthetic, political, and social concerns.

First held in 1987, this exhibition was initially conceived as an event to recognize the City’s active and visionary partnership with the 45th Street Artists’ Cooperative. With the aid of a Redevelopment Agency loan, the Cooperative was able to purchase its warehouse and the City played a major role in stabilizing the live/work environment so vital to its creative community. While the concept of the Exhibition began as a celebration of this partnership (and some of the original artists from the Co-op continue to submit work for inclusion in the Exhibition) it quickly expanded to embrace the entire artist population of Emeryville. Now any artist who either lives or works in Emeryville can submit their artwork for consideration for the Annual Exhibition.

The 25th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, photographs, prints, textiles, ceramics, and neon. The collection of artwork for the 25th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition was selected by a jury of art professionals through artist studio visits. Independent curator and exhibition designer Kathleen Hanna is curator and juror. The other jurors are Lonnie Lee, owner, Vessel Gallery, Oakland, and Paul Tomidy independent art curator and artist. (Works on exhibit are for sale.)

The mission of the non-profit Emeryville Celebration of the Arts, Inc. is to foster an appreciation for the arts and artists of Emeryville, and to promote the city as a culturally vital and progressive center for living and working. Now, for twenty-five years the Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition has continued to support this mission by providing a free public venue, open to all, to experience the rich diversity of artistic expression of those who live and work within the city of Emeryville.

“Emeryville has changed so much in the past two and a half decades. Twenty-five years ago this exhibition’s tagline was ‘Art the Other Industry’. Fast forward to 2011 - ‘Art the other Technology’ doesn’t quite have the same ring but perhaps the other creative thinking, the other innovative process. Bottom line, we are happy to have made the journey with our city into the 21st century and been one of many partners in its remarkable transformation.”, states Sharon Wilchar, Exhibition Coordinator and Chair of the City of Emeryville’s Public Art Advisory Committee.

Contributing artists include Mari Andrews, sculpture; Linda Lee Boyd, woodcut; Kirk Crippens, photography; Rae Dunn, ceramics; Ana Lisa Hedstrom, textiles; Ken Kalman, sculpture; Dean Santner, wood; and M. Louise Stanley, painting.

25th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition juror and curator Kathleen Hanna responded to her experience by saying:

“I came away from the tour of artist studios with a clear image of this delightful East Bay enclave. Physically, Emeryville is a wonderful combination of new architectural and landscape design and the impressive re-use of older industrial buildings and spaces by creative minds and hands. Equally impressive is the community structure. Dedicated individuals contribute to the success of the complex project that is the Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition supporting an incredibly rich and varied group of artists and creating the kind of ritual and celebration that travelers seek out all over the world.”

Juror Lonnie Lee, Lonnie Lee, owner, Vessel Gallery, Oakland, states:

“It was delightful to learn about the array and diversity of Emeryville visual artists. Touring the artists' workspaces and seeing the works in person provided a tactile understanding of the art at hand. To be included in the city's annual tradition was an honor indeed. Clearly Emeryville values the visual arts and its artists!”

Juror Paul Tomidy, independent art curator and artist, remarks:

“I was struck by the great range of different visions. There were works of intense, very busy visuals in contrast to quiet, meditative and subtle pieces. We saw very accomplished traditional techniques while also seeing brash, raw primitive art. In photography, digital manipulated expressions were in counterpoint to traditional 'old school' captured landscape images. This broad diversity makes for a provocative experience.”

For the sixth consecutive year, the Emeryville City Council has approved a Purchase Award Program in connection with the Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition. A selection panel will review the works in the exhibition and make a recommendation for the Purchase Award. With the approval of the City Council, the artwork selected will become part of the City’s permanent collection displayed at City Hall.

The 2011 exhibition site is generously donated by sponsor SIMEON Commercial Properties, LLC and Hollis Street Investors II, LLC. Additional sponsors for the 25th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition include the City of Emeryville through a substantial grant, Madison Marquette/Bay Street, Kava Massih Architects, Wareham Development, BRE Properties, Inc., and Ruby*s Cafe.
